Some of the major travel and tourism categories include adventure tourism<, extreme tourism, cultural tourism, heritage tourism, eco tourism, pilgrimage, space tourism and numerous others. Some of these specified tourisms are elaborated further.

Adventure Tourism – The conventional, stereotyped vacation usually means another prolonged hour of sunbathing at the seaside! Adventure tourism is just perfect for those who seek rather an eccentric mode of fun and an escapade closer to the nature. Adventure tourism includes physical activities and are usually sports oriented. Typically these include various activities such as mountaineering, ice skiing, hiking, trekking, rafting, bungee jumping and various others. The advancements in technology have also given rise to an extension of varied extreme sport activities, which are closely related to adventure tourism. These take account of snowboarding, scuba diving, ice climbing and hundreds other such activities which has achieved popularity among the tourists all over the world.

Eco tourism – This category of the travel and tourism is probably the most socially and ecologically concerned and it often deals with the betterment of the planet. Conventionally, eco tourism is associated with visits to the renowned national parks and rainforests, or in other words the places on earth where there is an abundance of flora and fauna or rich in culture and heritage. The host country often benefits from the eco tourism it holds for the nature lovers. Every year thousands of tourists visit the famous national parks of the Sarawakian Malaysia (east Malaysia), the rainforests of the South America, the wonderful Himalayas in Nepal and perhaps the luscious dense jungles of Kenya. There are special packages on eco tourism of several countries available every year for the International tourists.

Pilgrimage Tourism – This category of travel and tourism concerns with the pilgrims, the people who make sacred journey to a holy or a place of utmost importance according to the person’s religious views or beliefs. Typically every year a vast number of pilgrims are found in some of the most sacred places of the world. These comprises of places such as Kapilavastu in Nepal and some major areas in India for the Buddhists people. While the Muslims and the followers of Islam make their major pilgrimage in Mecca of Saudi Arabia. Twice in every year thousands of people flock in Mecca to perform the holy journey. However, apart from the religious viewpoint, travel and tourism in the modern day also associates the communism mission and beliefs. Many of the communist minded tourists now a day pay visit to the landmark places such as the Lenin’s Mausoleum in Red Square, Moscow and some similar places in other countries. However, this should be looked upon positively and the host country should rather contemplate more on the revenue it brings to the nation.
